Advertising is a form of communication that aims to induce a target audience to perform a particular action.
Advertising: Definition
These actions are often carried out to encourage the purchase of a product or service.
Advertiting can be used in various sectors: commerce, of course, with the sale of products, but also politics with electoral campaigns, for example, or public services and NGOs with awareness-raising or fundraising campaigns.
Advertising: history
The first forms of advertising appeared a very long time ago. Indeed, it is considered that it began in prehistoric times with the frescoes that were used to highlight the exploits of great warriors.
Then, in Antiquity in Thebes, we can consider that there was the first serial advertising: the gift of a gold coin to find a runaway slave.
In the Middle Ages, a different type of advertising emerged. Most people were illiterate at the time, so advertisements were made by criers. Then came the creation of the printing press in 1440, which marked a turning point in the history of advertising. This was the beginning of flyers and posters distributed in series in the cities.
At the time, there was no such thing as advertising, and the term did not appear until 1630.
The first advertisement to appear in a newspaper was published in 1660 in the London Gazette. It was an advertisement for toothpaste.
In the 20th century, advertisements developed and became more and more elaborate, especially as brands created stronger identities with logos, and then, beyond the visual dimension, a musical dimension was added.
Radio spots then appeared.
The 60s and 70s also had a huge impact on advertising, as TV spots appeared.
Today, it is omnipresent with the Internet.
