Sprint Design: stimulating creativity and innovation in teams
Sprint Design: a fast and collaborative method to design and test innovative solutions in record time. Discover the basic principles and benefits of this efficient way of working.
Definition of sprint design
Sprint design is a collaborative working method used to solve specific problems in a company and develop products or services quickly and efficiently. Developed by the design and strategy agency Google Ventures (GV), it is based on a user-centred approach.
This method consists of bringing together a multidisciplinary team for a defined period of about 5 days to work intensively on a project. During this period, the collaborators follow a series of steps to arrive at a clear final solution.
The different stages of sprint design
In order to prototype solutions and test hypotheses with users in an efficient way, the design sprint is composed of 5 steps, one step per day.
- Day 1 : Understanding the problem and defining the objective
– Presentation of the challenge or problem to be solved
– Discussion and clarification of the problem
– Definition of a clear objective for the sprint
– Identification of relevant users and stakeholders
- Day 2 : Generating ideas
– Collective brainstorming session
– Encouraging creativity and innovation
– Selection of the best ideas using voting and prioritisation methods
– Definition of the main hypothesis to be tested
- Day 3 : Selecting and developing an idea
– Select the main idea to be developed
– Developing a detailed plan for the prototype and test
– Discussion of how to make the idea viable, feasible and desirable to users
– Allocation of tasks for the rest of the sprint
- Day 4 : Prototype the solution
– Rapid creation of a basic prototype of the chosen idea
– Use simple and inexpensive methods for prototyping, such as drawing or gluing
– Setting up tests for the next day
– Preparing for the final presentation
- Day 5 : Testing the solution with potential users
– Preparation of the tests
– Research and invitation of potential users
– Testing of the prototype developed on day 4
– Collection of feedback and remarks from users
– Analysis and consideration of feedback to improve the prototype
– Conclusion of the design sprint and planning of the next steps
The benefits of sprint design
The sprint design method allows for rapid execution (only 5 days). Thus it allows teams and companies to save considerable time in the development of a product or service.
Sprint design is user-centred and therefore allows us to understand the user’s needs and expectations in creating the ideal product or service.
By quickly testing ideas and prototypes on our target, we can reduce the risk of project failure and validate what works best. With their feedback, we can quickly improve our prototype and keep costs to a minimum.
Finally, by using this method within your company, you will encourage collaboration, sharing and creativity within your teams. Indeed, by working with a multidisciplinary team, each of your members will have to be involved in the project to make it a success.
